At its core: Big Mama Shakes is synonymous with rock and roll. I don't mean that in the pretentious "I'm an artistic genius" kind of way that John Lennon or Robbie Robertson might have; I mean it in the most painfully fun and raucously raw way one can experience rock and roll.

Before the first steady rumble of the drums gives way to hard-hitting big-brass lines, before the rich warmth of the organ maneuvers its way around the backup singers' swingin' hips, before the "GottaHaveIt" and "GimmeDatGudSh*t" call and response stirs up an inescapable itch to move and groove, there is one single moment of silence.

And then the lights come up and the show begins.

With a fiery-hot, funky beat that echoes with the nostalgia of neo-soul and just enough grit to keep you hip thrustin' and toe tappin', Washington D.C.'s Aztec Sun's (AZS) voltaic performances are the result of the band's infectious melodies and the rare dynamism of the musicians creating them.

From its inception in 2013, AZTEC SUN has grown into an 8-piece ensemble with a sound that evokes a classic '70s feel all gussied up in a new school approach. In part driven by the band's culturally diverse background, the timelessness of the band's musical influences combined with lyrics lathered up in just enough heartbreak and weekend-anthem means that whether it's the old-school R&B seduction, the uptown Funky grooves, or a pop-alicious hit that gets you going, there's something for everyone.

The AZS FUNKtrain has made many stops throughout DC, MD, VA, and NY — Funk Parade, Velvet Lounge, Rock 'n' Roll Hotel, The Howard Theatre, Gypsy Sally's as well as World of Beer in C'ville and Bar Nine in NYC (to name a few). In every performance, AZTEC SUN unleashes the full palette of its creative juices to connect with its audience and push the AZS mantra – "WHATEVER MAKES YOU DANCE".

I want to make music that Gerald from "Hey Arnold" would listen to.
