Brokeback
Brokeback
Brokeback plays guitar music. Simultaneously specific and ambiguous guitar music. Instrumental guitar music. Surf, soundtrack, world, ethnic, non-ethnic ambient, jazz, all within the context of contemporary rock-n-roll. Ideally, Brokeback would only be heard on the far end of the AM radio dial while driving across the Great Plains at 3 in the morning. In the interest of modern commerce they make recordings for Thrill Jockey Records and try to get people to buy them. They are- Pete Croke on bass (Exit Verse, Pink Avalanche), James Elkington on guitar (Tweedy, Steve Gunn), Douglas McCombs on guitar (Tortoise, the Sea and Cake), and Areif Sless-Kitain on drums (the Eternals, Daughn Gibson).
Mind Over Mirrors
Mind Over Mirrors
Mind Over Mirrors is the solitary reeling of American harmoniumist/electronicist Jaime Fennelly. Utilizing an Indian pedal harmonium, oscillators, tape delays, and an assortment of synthesizing processors, Fennelly bends slowly-building, repetitive melodies into massive sonic mountains. Folklorist Brendan Greaves may have best summed up Mind Over Mirrors' "referential compass points—G.I. Gurdjieff's harmonium improvisations; certain particularly harmonically viscous recordings of Sacred Harp singers; Edward Artemiev's soundtracks to Tarkovsky films—in its patience, its simultaneously formal and folk aspects, and its sheer, unabashed (if intermittently anxious) beauty, it doesn't sound much like anything else being made today." His fourth album, When The Rest Are Up At Four, was released last Fall on Immune Recordings, following releases on Digitalis, Hands In the Dark & Aguirre/Gift Tapes.

"What makes Fennelly's work rise above homage is his use of Indian pedal harmonium, which cuts through his web of tape delays and synths and gives "Storing the Winter" a singular timbre." - Pitchfork
